Participatory Action Research

LIGHT Booklets

To complement the quantitative and modeling research, the LIGHT Consortium utilised qualitative participatory action research methods, including photovoice, in partner countries to actively engage communities affected by TB in data collection, analysis, dissemination and dialogue with decision makers. These communities included individuals with lived experiences, their caregivers, family members, and healthcare workers.

This participatory approach has been instrumental in co-creating solutions, shaping and informing person-centred, gender-responsive approaches to TB prevention and care. By engaging communities directly, the consortium has demonstrated the power and value of participatory methods in addressing complex issues including challenges of TB care across diverse settings. These engagements have also strengthened understanding of the intersection of TB and gender at the national level, contributing to improved knowledge, awareness and attitudes towards gender disparities in TB.

The booklets below showcase the participatory action research studies conducted by LIGHT partners in Nigeria, Kenya, Malawi, and Uganda. In Uganda and Malawi, the photovoice studies were conducted in local languages, Luganda and Chichewa, to retain the authenticity of participants' voices and ensure that their stories can be shared and understood within their own communities. English translations were also produced to enhance wider accessibility of these experiences.
